The first Dungeons and Dragons slot (Fortress of Fortunes) was released at the end of April 2009 by IGT and added to the slots directory here at OCV shortly after. The D&D Crystal Caverns slot (above) offers something a bit different, graphically at least. For people of a certain age, Dungeons and Dragons will bring back fond memories. In the days before computer games were widespread; this dice-driven role playing game was very popular. This review covers the original IGT slot version, which is subtitled Crystal Caverns. There are now two more, the Treasures of Icewind Dale and the Fortress of Fortunes. When I first saw this slot there seemed to be a glaring omission – the monsters. It turned out that these were included; it is just that you need to wait until the free spins round kicks in to find them.

Dungeons and Dragons uses the freefalling symbols concept which is finding its way into many IGT slot machines. When you get a winning combination, the symbols explode. This allows more symbols to fall into place (or move downwards) to fill the gaps – in turn creating some more winning combinations. You can get a cascade of 2 to 4 wins going quite regularly with this feature – and longer runs are possible.

Visually, this slot is on the plain side. There are bright crystal symbols and 3 characters from the game (a fighter, elf and guy with a bow). While it looks smart, this is not the most graphically appealing slot from IGT. The animations of the monsters in the free spins round does redress this a little. The sounds are good in this game. Dramatic music, and again the monsters top the list with a great evil laugh or roar.

While the free spins round is different enough from the main game to keep it interesting, and the freefall keeps you interested in the main game, I would not call this slot overly feature rich.

To play this slot, first you need to roll 3 dice… No, sorry, that is for the actual game. The slot is a 20 pay line video slot with 5 reels and 3 rows of symbols on each. You can bet up to 5 coins per line. The minimum spin amount is 20c online – though you should expect this to be higher in land based casinos.Dungeons And Dragons Slot Machine Locations

The symbol you are hoping to see line up is the D&D logo. This will net you 5000 coins for all 5, and 500 coins for 4. The warrior in armour is next, worth 1000 coins for 5, with the left worth 500 and the bowman 300. The remaining wins are from the green, blue and purple crystals. There is a wild symbol, which substitutes for everything except the last symbol – which is the bonus trigger. You need 3 bonus symbols to enter the free spins game.

Initially, you get 8 free spins, though this can be retriggered – potentially multiple times. The main game only lets you get 3 bonus symbols. In the feature itself you can get up to 5 of them, which adds 20 more spins to your total. The rules state that you cannot go over 300 spins.

This bonus is known as ‘Tumbling Treasures’. The symbols are a completely new set, with only the original D&D symbol remaining from the regular reels. There are 4 types of jewels, and 3 monsters. The monster symbols are all scatter symbols, and pay multiples of your total bet size for 3+ anywhere on the screen. The freefall (exploding) symbols system is still in place.

With a couple of extra added spins, this can be a very profitable bonus round – and is different enough from the main game to keep you engaged too.

This is a solid slot, though I feel it does not really have the kind of action that truly capitalizes on the classic game. There would be so many opportunities for different monster themed action or the mix of character professions to be used, that it seems a shame to leave them out. There is not a single wizard’s spell anywhere in sight.

Overall, I liked this game – particularly the bonus round. While I can see myself coming back for the occasional spin, this one did not make my top list for IGT slots.

Playing Dungeons and Dragons

Before you even get to the game proper, you get the opportunity to choose a hero to represent you from 3 choices. I chose ‘Varick’, who I think is the magician! Whichever you choose then takes the hero symbol spot for the duration of your session.

Next you pick the number of lines to play and your bet sizes. There are 20 lines, and I recommend using them all to take maximum advantage of the wild symbols. You can play this game from 20c a spin and up.

Prizes are dominated by the eye in the green crystal ball. This pays the biggest prize of 12,500 coins –though only if you bet the maximum 5 coins per spin ($1 minimum). For fewer coins 5 wilds pays 2500 instead. This symbols substitutes for everything except the dice scatter symbol. The D&D logo comes next, with 1000 coins for 5 (and prizes from 3+), followed by your hero character, the dragon and then the castle. Playing card symbols make up the smaller wins.

The dice symbol gets to entry into the ‘Fortress of Free Spins’ and also pays out a scatter prize which is based on your total bet.

Bonus Game for Dungeons and Dragons

Many slot bonus games are just generic pick-em or free spins games. This one is different; it feels like a big effort was make to keep it in the spirit of the original game. There are two parts, with the first a multi-level dungeon which is made up of 9 squares. You move your character around by clicking arrows and find multipliers or free spins. You will move down to new levels sometimes and then come across monsters, which you will have to ‘fight’ by rolling a 20 sided dice and getting above a certain score.

When you finally lose a battle, you will go to the free spins game with a number of spins, a multiplier (for example 3x on all wins) and you will quickly run through your spins. This can be a very profitable game, depending on how you did in the dungeon part.
